Renewing an HGV Licence in Northern Ireland: Medical and DLM1 Requirements
An HGV renewal may require a new medical report because of age, the expiry of vocational entitlement or a licensing review. Northern Ireland drivers should follow the DVA paperwork and use the DLM1 form specified for the application.
When Do You Need to Renew Your HGV Licence?
Vocational HGV licences have different renewal requirements from standard car licences. In NI, most HGV drivers renew:
- Every five years until the age of 65
- Every year after the age of 65
- Earlier if requested by the Driver & Vehicle Agency (DVA)
If you’re approaching your renewal date, it’s advisable to arrange your medical and submit your application well before your licence expires.
Do You Need a Medical to Renew Your HGV Licence?
If you’re renewing your HGV entitlement at or after the age of 45, you’ll normally need a DLM1 medical if your licence is issued in NI. Drivers whose vocational licence is issued by the DVLA in England, Scotland or Wales will usually require a D4 medical.
The medical confirms that you continue to meet the Group 2 medical standards required for professional drivers.
What Is a DLM1 Medical?
The DLM1 is the medical examination report used by the Driver & Vehicle Agency (DVA) in NI. During the appointment, a GMC-registered doctor completes the medical form after carrying out a health assessment.

What Documents Will You Need?
Before renewing your licence, you’ll normally need:
- Your DLM1 medical report (where required)
- Your HGV licence renewal application

If you have an existing medical condition, additional information may occasionally be requested before your licence is renewed.
What Happens During the Medical?
Your HGV medical is straightforward and usually includes:
- Medical history review
- Blood pressure assessment
- Vision assessment
- General physical examination
- Medication review
- Completion of your DLM1 medical report
Once complete, your paperwork will be ready to submit as part of your licence renewal application.
Common Medical Conditions
The doctor will assess any medical conditions that could affect your ability to safely drive large goods vehicles.

- Neurological disorders
- Mental health conditions
- Vision problems
Having a medical condition does not automatically prevent you from renewing your licence. Each case is considered individually against the Group 2 medical standards.
Can You Drive While Waiting for Your New Licence?
In many circumstances, you may be able to continue driving while your renewal application is being processed, provided you’ve submitted a valid application and continue to meet the legal requirements. If you’re unsure whether you can continue driving, you should check your individual circumstances before driving.
